Towards Greater Mutual Learning Between Chinese and Greek Civilizations

2025-03-18

On November 6, the 75th Session of the Global Insight Series was held at UCASS in Beijing, alongside the conferment ceremony of honorary professorship for Mr. Panagiotis C. Laskaridis. Zhao Rui, Vice President of CASS attended the ceremony to address the audience.

According to Zhao Rui, the dialogue and mutual learning across civilizations constitute not only a catalyst for collective progress of humanity, but also an essential pathway to building a community of shared future. Given the current global context, China and Greece are well positioned to contribute their wisdom and strength to world peace and development through further cultural exchanges and deepening cooperation, offering joint solutions to global challenges. The Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation, as a staunch custodian and advocate of Greek literature, artistic legacy, navigation traditions, and maritime history, has emerged as a key bridge for cultural exchanges and cooperation between China and Greece. The launch of the Centre for China Studies through its 2019 agreement with CASS has set a new paradigm in bilateral academic cooperation. The conferral of honorary professorship upon Mr. Panagiotis Laskaridis by UCASS today signifies an important leap in cross-cultural engagement. This milestone is poised to foster greater mutual learning in culture and education sectors between two sides, accelerating the internationalization of UCASS in academic research and talent cultivation.

In his speech titling "China-Greece Relations and Mutual Learning of Civilizations," Panagiotis Laskaridis noted the enduring and profound influence of ancient Greek civilization, which has shaped and continues to shape the world with its thousands of years of history. As representatives of ancient civilizations, Greece and China share a long-standing history of interactions across various dimensions, spanning political, economic, and cultural spheres. In the context of deepening globalization, the cooperation between China and Greece in cultural, economic, and educational domains is increasingly vital.

Zhang Zhengwen, President of UCASS, conferred the certificate to Mr. Panagiotis Laskaridis for honorary professorship. Attended by over 500 faculty members and students from UCASS, the event also featured discussions with Laskaridis around the theme of the session.
